A few months later after Matthieu Blazy was appointed Creative Director at Bottega Veneta, it finally happened: the Fall-Winter 2022 was revealed. And Blazy delivered. Bravo! Most of reviews commented on one very specific thing: the Belgian designer took the Italian brand back to its roots, reminding us all of how sometimes it is always beautiful to embrace the past.
“Bottega Veneta is in essence pragmatic because it is a leather goods company. Because it specialises in bags it is about movement, of going somewhere; there is fundamentally an idea of craft in motion. It is style over fashion in its timelessness. That is part of its quiet power,” says Blazy.
What makes Bottega Veneta, Bottega Veneta? In creative director Matthieu Blazy’s foundation collection there is a return to a fundamental questioning of the brand: a building on the past to realise the present and evoke the future.
Timelessness – that’s the key word behind all this. Blazy’s first collection for Bottega Veneta is the past, but it is also the present and the future at the same time. It’s opening a closet and finding a tremendous treasure – one you can wear from day to night, and with a little party from dusk till dawn. Into leather and jeans? Matthieu’s got you. Simplicity at its best through a delicious set of pieces for the man that moves – the one who learns from the past so he makes it right to the future.
The Bottega Veneta Fall Winter 2022 collection is a story of “clothing and character, explored by maker and wearer, an exchange that involves a sense of motion and emotion.” Feelings run the world, right? Love moves mountains and Blazy’s take on the Italian house is shaking the industry.
Here, the question isn’t ‘why?’ But, ‘why not?’ An individual’s gestures matter; it’s ultimately the wearer’s decision how to move and live in this clothing, of how they will tell their own tales through these pieces, that is ultimately respected and encouraged by the maker. And it is perhaps this that defines what Bottega Veneta truly stands for: an emotional investment in objects for life – in both senses of the term.
Has Bottega Veneta returned home? Feels like it.
