Innovation and creativity are two concepts that are linked. Through time there have been people and movements that have not only pushed the aesthetic vision that characterizes an era or time but have also helped certain technological advances that began as ideas become a reality.
Ettore Sottsass, leader of the Memphis group, a Milanese design and architecture movement that based its creations on anti-conformist, daring, and colorful codes was responsible in 1988 for creating a peculiar watch that revolutionized the industry at the time: the Tissot Heritage Memphis.
To pay tribute to this avant-garde movement on its 40th anniversary, Tissot revives this model with contemporary attributes on a technical level and with the timeless aesthetic characteristics that only a mind like Sottsass could devise.
Like the furniture created by Sotsass, this model defied the customs and conventions of its time. The Tissot Heritage Memphis is round, but with a lenticular profile. This geometric grouping is reminiscent of Sottsass designs, such as Totem, the first of the movement. The box is enlarged and hooks onto the strap. A new shape that fits the others like a set of cubes, one of Sottsass’s emblems.
“The watch that I have designed for Tissot takes up, in particular in the graphics and in its structure, some signs and systems that allowed already in antiquity to communicate with the universe, at least in a figurative sense. The mandala was one of them ”, declared on that occasion the famous designer.
The new Tissot Heritage Memphis collection presents a style created by Sottsass that goes from the mystical to the rational. A combination of geometric and ancient symbolism that generates a connection, depending on one’s visions and beliefs, to what we call “universe”.
A provocative and revolutionary model, this watch is not only iconic for the company but also to fashion in general. The exuberant proportions in each of its representative 80’s elements are perfectly combined with contemporary aesthetics. The dials retain their aesthetic principles but increase their proportions. The case has been reworked with longer and more contemporary lines. The crystal features a new domed design to perfectly hug the stepped profile of the case and bezel.
The Tissot Heritage Memphis is differentiated by a seconds indicator in the center that dispenses with a hand in favor of a small disc marked with a dot. The case backs comprise a pattern of seemingly random geometric shapes, reminiscent of the backgrounds of all Memphis décor. This pattern is repeated on the interior faces of the rubber straps that can easily be interchanged with vegan leather straps.
Formal for being minimalist and at the same time extravagant for being avant-garde. It is a watch that can adapt to the best of each world, a sculpture that you can wear on your wrist.
The limited-edition Memphis men’s collection consists of 3000 units for the black PVD version, and 2500 for the two-color version and will be for sale in Mexico exclusively at Joyerías Bizarro both in their physical and online stores.
